Trends in Application Development

On Thursday Aug 8, 2013 we had a live Google Hangout where we invited Dev Connections speakers Craig Shoemaker, Shy Cohen, Chris Love, Ido Flatow, John Peterson, Pranav Rastogi, Stephen Bohlen to talk about Trends in Software Development.

This years' DevConnections is different from previous and this is our attempt to get in touch with our community and get their feedback. Our strategy is Community-First and this is the second Hangout we've done in last 2 weeks to reach out to the community. This Hangout brings the speakers together where you listen to them and find out why they picked their talk and how their talks are very complementary and inter-related. It's different than many other conferences where the task of picking talks is delegated to Track Chairs and the speakers never end up interacting. This year we are focusing on making the interactions happen between the speakers and the also the community.

The speakers get an idea of what other speakers are presenting and so there is no overlap and you as a guest know which sessions to pick as you know what they are going to be talking about. In this hangout we cover a wide variety of topics starting from SignalR by none other than Pranav Rastogi from Microsoft ASP.NET team. He talks about why you need to use SignalR and what are the advantages of it. Also, not only using SignalR on Web servers but also using it in-process using Katana which is based on OWIN. He covers Nancy briefly and talks about the Trends in Application Development and the Microsoft ASP.NET team's roadmap. After the hangout today Pranav had an Aha moment where he decided to change his second talk to include the latest Identity related changes added into VS 2013.

Then we had Craig Shoemaker talk about how to take a lot of these different frameworks and technologies like HTML5, Web API, Bootstrap and Entity Framework to build world-class Web Applications. Stephen Bohlen brings up his talks where he will get into real world scenarios and explain how Domain Driven Design can be rightly used to solve Enterprise problems. Shy Cohen and Ido Flatow talk about how to do caching right and learn about HTTP fundamentals. John Peterson and Chris Love get into javascript testing, debugging in modern browsers, web performance optimizations etc.

We also briefly touch upon the workshops we are doing including the one by Ido on HTTP with Asp.NET Web API and the one on creating SPA (Single Page Apps) with best patterns and practices. More information can be found here. Yes, feel free to bring your own laptop (BYOL) and join us in the amazing experience of creating an awesome web app.

Again watch the video to listen to other folks including David Giard and Esteban Garcia. Please feel free to reach me at me@chanderdhall.com if you have any questions, concerns or comments.
